Prof. Dr. Thomas Krieg

Thomas Krieg, chairman of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Cologne from 1991 until 2017 was born in 1949 in Büderich near Düsseldorf. He studied medicine in Berlin and Vienna. Several fellowships enabled him to work at international universities and research institutions such as the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Martinsried/Germany and the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm/Sweden and the NIH in Bethesda/USA. In 1982 he received his board certification for dermatology and venereology at Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. In 1991 he was appointed Full Professor and Chairman of the Department of Dermatology at University of Cologne. From 1995 to 2002 he served as Director of the Center for Molecular Medicine Cologne. In 2001 he was elected Prorektor for Research of the University of Cologne and in 2011 he became Dean of the Medical Faculty at University of Cologne. Since 2019 he is Vice President of the German National Academy of Science, Leopoldina.

Thomas Krieg’s main research interests concentrate on wound healing, auto-immune and fibrotic diseases, connective tissue disorders, cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions and connective tissue biology. His scientific work has been honored by numerous awards including the Otto Hahn medal and the Max Planck Research prize from Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

Professor Krieg is honorary member of several national dermatological societies and honorary fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. From the Semmelweis University in Budapest/Hungary and the University of Lund/Sweden he received the Dr. honoris causa. He is honorary member of the ESDR and the JSID. His activities for the scientific community include reviewing and editing. He is member of the editorial board of several journals and is currently serving as Principle Deputy Editor for the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.
